Key Project Evaluation Meeting of “Green Super Rice Variety Selective Breeding “Held in Wuhan

Evaluation Meeting of Key Project “Green Super Rice Variety Selective Breeding ” , the project of National High-tech R&D Program(863 program under the 12th five-year plan),was held in Wuhan on March 15th and 16th, 2019.The evaluation group was comprised of Wan Jianmin, member of the CAE and professor of Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Xie Hua’an, member of CAS and professor of Fujian Academy of Agricultural Sciences, and other 5 well-known scholars. The meeting was attended by Wei Qinfang, director of Department of Science and Technology for Rural Development of Ministry of Science and Technology, Ge Yiqiang, director of China Rural Technology Development Center, Li Zhaohu, President of HZAU, and some other 60 key members of the project.

Ge Yiqiang chaired the meeting. Wei Qinfang, on behalf of the Department of Science and Technology for Rural Development, delivered a speech. She said that we should intensify the transformation of S&T achievements and that the fine varieties should be applied in demonstration areas. She also pointed out that the project team should conduct in-depth research on the follow-up work and actively put forward major projects for the 14th five-year plan, which should be in line with the sixth national technology forecast and the national medium and long-term science and technology development plan (2021-2035).

Li Zhaohu made the welcome speech. Then, the leaders of five programs under the Project presented reports on their programs respectively. After the discussion of the evaluation group, a consensus was reached --- all five programs were apbrouproved.

A series of major results were achieved during the implementation of the project. Variation analysis of 3010 rice core collection resources from all over the world was completed. A global database of Genotypes and Phenotypes of core collection and breeding parents and single chromosome segments substitution lines has been built. A rice genome-wide selective breeding technology platform based on high-throughput sequencing and gene chip has been established. The evaluation method of water saving and drought resistance was developed and improved. Three agricultural industry standards have been formulated and promulgated. Methods for the identification of green super rice varieties have been formulated. Five cultivation techniques of “two types” were integrated. 68 new rice varieties with green traits have been approved at the state or provincial level. 134 new plant variety rights were declared, with 64 authorized. 172 patents for invention were applied at home and abroad, with 40 granted. 220 papers, including 92 SCI papers, and three monographs, were published. Free germplasm were distributed 40,000 times to more than 40 universities and research institutions in China. The extension area of new rice varieties has exceeded 150 million mu, which has brought remarkable economic and social benefits. The concept of "green super rice" is a leading academic thought originally proposed by Chinese scientists. The scientific and technological achievements of “green super rice” were selected for the large-scale exhibition celebrating the 40th anniversary of China’s reform and opening-up.

The national high-tech research and development program (863 program) is a high-tech development program implemented in China, which was initiated in 1986 and integrated into the national key research and development program from 2016. “Green Super Rice Variety Selective Breeding” project was listed as a key project of the 863 program in 2010, and was supported again by the Ministry of Science and Technology as a major project of the 863 program in modern agricultural technology in 2014. Organized by HZAU, the project was implemented by HZAU and 27 rice breeding and scientific research institutions nationwide.
