Further Progress in Bilateral Cooperation with UNL

On October 29, the 3rd bilateral academic conference of HZAU and University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) was held at lecture hall of State Key Laboratory of Agricultural Microbiology.


At the opening ceremony, Prof. Qing Ping, vice president of HZAU, extended his welcome to all participants on behalf of our university. He also briefly introduced the situation and international strategy of HZAU and wished further cooperation with UNL. Prof. Wang Xuelu, dean of College of Life Science and Technology, reviewed the 3 years’ bilateral cooperation in his speech. Then, Prof. Archie Clutter, dean of UNL’s Agricultural Research Division, introduced school-running characteristics of UNL.


Afterwards, centering upon the theme of Root Biology and Plant-Microorganism Interactions, 10 guests from HZAU and UNL and 3 special guests-- Prof. Gary Stace from University of Missouri, Prof. Tian Changfu from China Agricultural University and Prof. Christian Staehelin from Sun Yat-sen University gave reports respectively, which covered plant pathogenic bacteria effectors, controllable expression of codon, interaction of rhizobia effectors, single-cell types of crop root and systems biology approach of single cells and root nodules symbiosis mechanism, etc. Prof. Ed Cahoon was also invited to introduce the research of root and rhizobium innovation center of UNL. Prof. Wang, Prof. Dong Zhiqiang and Prof. Cao Yangrong presided academic reports respectively.

On the morning of October 30, the bilateral cooperation negotiation conference of HZAU and UNL was held in Room A202 of the First Complex Building. Six scholars of UNL including Prof. Archie Clutter, and representatives of HZAU including Jiang Heng, director of the academic affairs office, attended the conference. They discussed the HZAU-UNL programs of short-term overseas students, “2+2” joint training program for undergraduates, labs joint training and the foundation of international joint lab for graduates. Both sides confirmed that HZAU would send about 30 undergraduate and graduate students to study in UNL for over 3 months in above three ways. They also discussed tuition discount, application procedure and requirement in details.


During the conference, Prof. Li Zhaohu, president of our university, and Prof. Wu Ping, the vice president, met representatives successively and discussed how to promote comprehensive cooperation with UNL. Archie Clutter and his delegation also visited the history museum and National Key Laboratory of Crop Genetic Improvement of HZAU.


In recent years, the College of Life Science and Technology has actively promoted the internationalization of talent cultivation and made some achievements with the support of the university. Through increasing investment, relying on experts, and strengthening services, the college has established specific joint training programs with prestigious overseas universities including University of Birmingham, Durham University, University of California San Diego, UNL, and Australian National University. With regard to student exchanges, specific support policies have been formulated such as financial support, recommendation and exemption from exam for degree, and student status management. Based on the investigation and research, Q&A List for International Exchange Program of the College of Life Science & Technology has been compiled. And the “QQ group for overseas students” has been created on the basis of publicity in every grade. In 2018, 32 undergraduates from the college have taken part in study abroad program lasting more than 90 days.
