International Workshop on Plant Polyamines Held in HZAU

On October 27, the International Workshop on Plant Polyamines was held in Huazhong Agricultural University(HZAU). This workshop attracted over 50 scholars from more than 10 research institutions at home and abroad. It featured more than 10 varieties of crop plants, including fruits, vegetables and flowers. On the morning of the 27th, Professor Liu Jihong, the convenor of the workshop, presided over the opening ceremony. Yang Shaobo, Vice President of the university, Guan Huanda, executive vice-director of the Office of Science and Technology Development, and Zhang Hongrong, Secretary of the School Party Committee of the College of Horticulture & Forestry Sciences delivered welcome speeches at the opening ceremony respectively.
In his speech at the opening ceremony, Yang said, as a college boasting a“ Double First-Class”discipline, the College of Horticulture & Forestry Sciences has attached great importance to the talent cultivation. The College would invest more in international academic exchange and major cooperation projects, so as to establish an open and win-win scientific research body and in-depth cooperation and exchange mechanisms. He also pointed out that discussion on the latest research progress in plant polyamines was of great importance both theoretically and practically. With the joint efforts of all scholars, he believed, this meeting would be a great success.
Guan said, relying on the innovation team, the College has long been committed to further international exchanges and cooperation in scientific research, international cooperative projects, and the building of an international joint innovation platform. He hoped that the scholars present could support HZAU and the College for the research and find more breakthroughs on plant polyamines.
Zhang also stressed that the workshop not only provided an opportunity for academic exchange, but also could further the intensive study on polyamines in the future.
At the workshop, 15 professors, such as Prof. Minocha from the University of New Hampshire, Prof. Liu Jihong of HZAU and Prof. Takahashi of Okayama University, made speeches on the metabolism of polyamines in plants, the mechanism of polyamines in response to stress, regulatory mechanisms and etc. Prof. Liu concluded that polyamines played an important role in plant growth, stress response, and crop yields. In the future, gene expression, biosynthesis, oxidation, and transcriptional regulation of polyamines will be the research foci. He also suggested that an international research team on plant polyamines be set up, which received great support from the participants.
