Zhu Xun Talks about Struggling Youth

Zhu Xun attends Shizishan Forum

On the evening of October 26, the famous CCTV host Zhu Xun was invited to Shizishan Forum of HZAU. She delivered a speech titled “The youth, we struggled together in those years” at Student Center. The speaker shared her feelings of youth with over 1200 teachers and students present, and expressed her expectation on the young students. Yao Jianglin, Vice President and Deputy Secretary of the University Party Committee attended the lecture. He met with Zhu Xun before the lecture, and introduced the basic information of HZAU, including the history, tradition, talents cultivation, as well as the ongoing World-class Discipline construction.

The lecture kicked off with a quick Q&A session. Zhu Xun’s witty remarks immediately made the atmosphere full of laughter and joy. First of all, Zhu Xun shared Zhou Enlai’s story with the audience in a vivid way. Zhou was the first premier of the People’s Republic of China, who devoted his entire life to practicing his belief. When Zhou was 20, Marxism came into his sight and buried the seed of faith into his soul, which changed his entire life. When Zhu Xun read Premier Zhou’s journal, she was so shocked that she couldn’t help asking herself: “ Have I met anything that had a huge impact on my life when I was 20?” Zhu Xun also asked the audience present to think about this question, hoping everyone could make best use of the precious youth so as to realize its value. Zhu Xun said, she was deeply moved by the love story between Premier Zhou and his wife, Deng Yingchao. In their twilight years, although they had no wealth, no children, namely nothing to leave, they still trusted in and supported each other. “In the journey of love, one will come across lots of temptations. Things like good appearance, talent, fame, wealth and power, will easily captivate young people. However, these things, just like double-edged swords, the more quickly you are attracted by them, the more pathetic you will be when your love comes to an end. I would like all of you to know that, only when one’s disposition and temperament is in harmony with each other, can their love stand the test of time, just like Zhou and Deng’s ,” said Zhu Xun.

Later, Zhu Xun talked of Kazuo Inamori, a teacher she met with when she studied in Japan. Inamori influenced her a lot because he not only taught her knowledge of economics, but also imparted her with the philosophy of life. Zhu Xun shared the audience with the most impressive lines from Inamori. “First, you should always respect for nature and love for mankind. That means you must follow the laws of nature, and be willing to show the softest part of your heart to people around you.” “Second, you must work to the utmost of your abilities and focus on one thing with perseverance”, this is what motivated Zhu Xun to move forward on her career. Zhu Xun said frankly, “ I truly can be counted as one of the most hard-working hosts in CCTV.” “Third, there are three types of people, people who can fire themselves up, people who can be fired up by something, and people can not be fired up. Which type do you belong to?” Zhu Xun encouraged the audience to be the former two types, that means, one should always burn with a fierce fighting spirit in this fast-paced world, particularly in his/her youth.

Thyroid tumor once plunged Zhu Xun into unspeakable misery. However, it was the disease that made her realize that she should appreciate everything in her life. She explained, “It is inevitable to encounter some trials and tribulations in your life. You either choose to succumb to them, or view them as ‘blessings in disguise'. You have to believe they all will eventually be the stepping-stones to your success.” Zhu Xun told the audience that, when she was diagnosed with the tumor at first, she was in great agony. However, in the fight against the disease, she gradually found herself stronger and stronger. She encouraged the students that, “Don’t be afraid of getting hurt, since your wounded wings will recover and become even stronger.” This thought-provoking remark drew forth a shower of warm applause.

Zhu Xun believed, college students are now in a changing world where both challenges and opportunities prevail, which is an era that she once dreamed of. By associating the trend of the times, Zhu Xun pointed out that artificial intelligence and big data will dominate all aspects of life in the future. She raised a question like: “ What will you see? And what will you create?” Zhu Xun encouraged students to take advantage of their specialties, adapt to the trend of the times, thus creating a brilliant future. Referring to the motto spirit of HZAU, that is “industrious in learning, vigorous in practice, eminent in society and inspirational in life”, Zhu Xun said: “ I wish all of you can serve others with an altruistic mindset when you are young, because you will simply get a sense of satisfaction and fulfillment from it.”

In the final Q&A part, a student asked Zhu Xun how to deal with the uncertainty and depression that he sometimes had. Zhu Xun suggested everyone read more, and think more often. After another student shared her story of struggle against thyroid disease with people present, Zhu Xun invited her onto the stage and gave her a warm hug. This scene moved many teachers and students to tears. Zhu Xun said: “ Please remember, it is not your fault to fall ill. Do not flinch, nor complain. If we are doomed to face the cruelty and tears that life impose on us, then, let’s face them with smile.”
