Seminar on “Development Strategy of Horticulture Discipline and Optimization of Discipline Code”

On the afternoon of September 15, the seminar “Development Strategy of Horticulture Discipline and Optimization of Discipline Code” supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China was held in HZAU attracting numerous attendees including academician Deng Xiuxin, deputy dean of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, president of our university, Yu Zhenliang, director of the Seventh Division of the Department of Life Sciences of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, Yao Jianglin, deputy secretary of the Party Committee and vice president of the university, and more than 30 horticultural experts from relevant institutions across the country. The seminar was hosted by Guan Huanda, executive vice dean of the Institute of Science and Technology Development.

Yao Jianglin first extended a warm welcome to the attendees and then pointed out that the seminar is on a small scale but at a high level. The experts present have been playing a vital role in developing horticulture disciplines, supporting and guiding horticulture industry in China; and agricultural industry is one of the major driving force to alleviate poverty, and the development of horticulture has practical significance in the implementation of targeted poverty alleviation.

Yu Zhenliang, director of the Seventh Division of the Department of Life Sciences of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, noted in his speech that the experts at the meeting should focus on such tasks of the seminar as the optimization and adjustment of discipline codes, major national demand in horticultural industry and the bottleneck issues.

Experts attending the conference had a thorough discussion centered on “the cutting-edge trend of horticultural discipline development, hot research topics, intersections with other disciplines, new discipline growth points, secondary and tertiary discipline codes that can be added (or deleted), and optimizable research directions”. After that, a new framework for the optimization and adjustment of the codes of horticulture disciplines has been set.

The experts also fully discussed the national strategic needs of China’s horticultural industry and the “bottlenecks”, and picked out the most urgent issues to be resolved.

In his closing remarks, President Deng called on all the experts at the seminar to prepare earnestly for the relevant paperwork that falls within their task scope grounded on full investigation and survey. He also proposed that the leading experts in all universities and institutions with horticulture disciplines carefully cultivate and actively mobilize young talents to join in the research so that new vitality can be injected into the development of horticulture disciplines.
