President Li: Integrating “T-shaped” Knowledge Structure into Graduate “AI+” Curriculum

On March 29th, a seminar was convened in HZAU to discuss the construction of the “AI+” series of courses for graduates. President Li Zhaohu, Vice President Yan Jianbing graced the occasion and delivered speeches. Li Bin, Executive Deputy Dean of the Graduate School, presided over the seminar.

Qi Jing, Director of the Training Department of the Graduate School at HZAU, provided an overview of the overarching framework of the 2024 cultivation scheme for postgraduates, emphasizing the development of information courses. Zhang Hongyu, Dean of the College of Informatics, gave an account of the implementation of general artificial intelligence courses tailored to graduate students from non-information backgrounds. Li Guoliang, vice dean of the College of Informatics, analyzed the application cases of large models, set forth views on its fundamental algorithms and knowledge, training methods, as well as ways to integrate it into graduate courses. Professors such as Li Lin and Xiong Xiong provided insights into the development concept and plans for advanced training courses in smart breeding.

Yan noted that the emerging technological revolution involves the close integration of traditional disciplines with artificial intelligence, big data, and other information technologies. He underscored the necessity of enhancing the overall information literacy of graduate students, and deepening the reform of graduate education through the promotion of the “AI+” series of courses in an effective and efficient way.

President Li emphasized that AI, as a strategic technology shaping the future, serves as a new driver in the race for digital dominance. It is exerting a profound influence on and reshaping the way we think and work. Graduate supervisors, administrators, and students are expected to trace the development of the times and avoid being left behind in this technological wave, turning AI into a helpful assistant in improving learning and work efficiency. To this end, Li advocated for a balanced approach to constructing the “AI+” course series, ensuring both breath and depth for a robust knowledge structure. He proposed a “T-shaped” framework wherein the horizontal section represents a broad understanding of AI across various disciplines. In this respect, he urged the College of Informatics to offer courses covering general-purpose large model applications, operational skills for all graduate students while prioritizing hands-on experience and real-world case studies. Meanwhile, the vertical section symbolizing depth emphasizes the application of AI in specialized fields. In this regard, he encouraged each College to offer model courses in diverse domains, such as biological breeding, economic analysis, and geospatial image processing, thereby highlighting the applications of AI in various fields and the disciplinary nuances.
