HZAU Wins Prizes in 2023 IRFGC

Recently, the results of the national final of the 2023 China Intelligent Robot Fighting and Gaming Competition (IRFGC) held in Beijing Institute of Technology were announced, and 3 teams from the College of Informatics of HZAU won 2 national first prizes and 1 national second prize.

The team consisting of Liu Ziyi, Li Shengyao and Zheng Jiayi won the national first prize of the Unified Component Wheeled Robot Autonomous Fighting Competition. The fighting robot they designed coordinated the use of infrared ranging sensor and infrared photoelectric sensor. It identified objects with cameras and artificial intelligence controllers based on well-conceived mechanical devices, pushing obstacles off the ring accurately and quickly.

The team including Lu Dongli, Li Jinliang, Lu Wenhui and Lin Yulan won the national first prize in the service robot handling competition. The intelligent pickup robot they designed were able to achieve automatic SLAM mapping, positioning and navigation via its own laser radar. The robot, equipped with a voice array sensor based on intelligent recognition algorithm, could be controlled by human voice. The robot, equipped with a depth sensor and a vision sensor based on target recognition, color recognition and other algorithms, featured automatic recognition of items. The comprehensive array of functions enabled the robot to automatically recognize different objects and transport them to the corresponding location.

The team involving Zhang Yuqi, Ma Jie, Chen Xuer and Zhang Xinyue won the national second prize in the handling competition. The intelligent handling robot they designed based on voice and image recognition had built-in sensors such as laser radar, camera and GPS, which gathered information on the robot’s surroundings and its location. Map construction was achieved with the help of SLAM algorithm and keyboard operation, and then the best path to the destination was designed by using the path planning algorithm. After successful path planning, the navigation algorithm would be used to achieve autonomous driving.

The three teams were supervised by Professor Qin Li and Professor Sha Ying from the Department of Artificial Intelligence. Qin Li said that education on artificial intelligence against the backdrop of new engineering not only required students to have a solid theoretical foundation, but also the ability to apply the theories they learned to practice and an innovative spirit. She said that researches on intelligent robot technologies were an subject of engineering practice integrating algorithm, software development and hardware building, which put high standards on the comprehensive capabilities of the student participants. This competition provided them with a platform for innovation, practice, communication and demonstration. The platform not only improved their creativity, develop capabilities on engineering practice, team organization and coordination, but also gave students a chance to communicate and learn from outstanding student teams of universities and colleges across the country, and expand their horizons. In addition, participating in discipline competitions was an important part of the education and practical training of innovative scientific and technological talents of intelligent robots from the College of Informatics.

China Intelligent Robot Fighting and Gaming Competition, sponsored by the Chinese Association for Artificial Intelligence, is a competition on robotics research and creative development for college students. A total of 208 universities and 1035 teams, including Tsinghua University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Tongji University, Harbin Institute of Technology, Beihang University, Xi’an Jiaotong University and other well-known universities in China, applied for the competition, and 217 teams were selected to enter the final after the preliminary match. The first, second and third prizes were awarded to the outstanding teams in the competition, and the total award proportion didn't exceed 40% of the total number of registered teams. Among them, the first, second and third prizes accounted for about 10%, 15% and 15% respectively.
