The spring breeze sways the trees and everything is bursting with vitality. On March 18, HZAU carried out a tree-planting activity beside the greenway of Yezhi Lake (at the intersection between Xiangzhang Road and Xuefu Road). More than 40 people participated in the planting activity, including leaders Gao Chi, Liao Jizhong, Wang Jianhong and Guo Gangqi, members of the HZAU Greening Committee, and representatives of young teachers and students.

While lush green trees are in their utmost luxuriance in the height of summer, crape myrtle trees provide year-round interest and color with their showy red flowers. This year, we planted crape myrtle trees flowering a hundred days. Prof. Ye Yaomei (from the College of Horticulture & Forestry Science and a member of Greening Committee) introduced the keys to cultivation: “dig a deep hole, place the top of the root ball slightly above ground level, center the tree within the hole, backfill in stages, step on soil by layers to heap it up tight, keep good drainage, stake high”.

The teachers and students worked together to dig the tree pits, cultivate and fertilize the soil, plant the trees and water them. They warmly interacted with each other during their work.

Mr. Li Qiang (teacher from the College of Horticulture and Forestry Science) who participated in the planting said, “Plant a small seedling, harvest a noble tree”. Clothing the Shizishan to make it greener is to contribute to campus construction. Liu Han (teacher from the College of Fisheries) said that the tree planting activity was significant as it brought hope and new life to people who take root in the Shizishan.

Yuan Shen (postdoctoral fellow from the College of Plant Science & Technology) said he hoped to grow together with the crape myrtle trees he had planted, adding green to the campus and vitality to agriculture.

The voluntary tree planting activity is guided by the HZAU Greening Committee, and jointly organized by the university office, human resources department and other departments. The relevant person in charge of the Greening Committee said that this tree planting activity was small in scale due to the Covid-19 control measures, but it was of great significance. HZAU has always had a good tradition of loving trees, planting trees and protecting trees. This initiative aims to put the concept of green development into practice, create a green campus and consolidate the achievements of national civilized campus construction.
