From December 14 to 17, the 4th Belt & Road International Conference on Traditional Medicine and 2021 Symposium on the Chinese Medicinal Materials organized by HZAU were held online and offline. Over 70 experts and scholars from 25 countries and regions, including China, Russia, India, South Africa, Brazil, Iran, Egypt attended the conference. They had an in-depth exchange of views on themes like “Medicinal Plant Resources”, “Domestic and International Situation and Trade of Traditional Chinese Medicines” and “Science, Technology and Cultural History of International Exchange of Traditional Medicines”, etc.

Yan Jianbin, Vice President of HZAU, Yang Shengchao, Vice President of Yunnan Agricultural University and Li Mei, Consultant of International cooperation, Department of Science and Technology of Hubei addressed speeches at the opening ceremony. They hoped this conference would build a bridge for the exchange and mutual appreciation of cultures of neighboring States and countries along the “Belt and Road”, promote innovation in Chinese medicine, and push forward the common development of medicine in the field of science, teaching, research and production for these countries.
42 presentations were conducted during the 4-day conference. These presentations covered not only the classical research fields of traditional medicine such as traditional medicine resources and special ethnic medicine traditions and customs of different countries and regions, isolation and modification of drug active substances, pharmacology of natural products, but also the biosynthesis of drug active substances, gene editing and modification of medicinal plants, genomics of medicinal plants, discovery of active substances in medicinal plants and gut microbiomics under drug intervention, which are closely integrated with the research directions of cutting-edge technology.
This conference is not only a series of meetings of the International Conference on Traditional Medicines hosted by Huazhong Agricultural University for many years, but also one of the activities of the International Institute for Science and Technology Innovation of Traditional Chinese Medicines of “Science and Technology China” & “Belt and Road”, which was led by Huazhong Agricultural University in 2021.
