Breeding pigs are essential to the pig industry. Yang Shaobo, Vice President of HZAU, said that since the first National Breeding Pigs Competition 21 years ago, the excellent breeding pigs selected by the HZAU Breeding Pigs Testing Center have been auctioned, which has brought economic benefits of more than 10 billion yuan to the society and helped thousands of pig farmers to realize their dream of becoming rich. HZAU will continue to devote to the high-quality development of China’s pig industry, said Vice President Yang.

Su Hongtian, the chief engineer of the National Animal Husbandry Station, said that the competition has become an event with domestic and international influence. After the recovery of pig production capacity, the market price fell sharply again. Holding the competition as scheduled is not only a practical action to promote the sustainable and healthy development of the pig industry, but also a strong response to difficulties brought by market and COVID-19 pandemic. It will certainly play a positive role in deeply implementing the national pig genetic improvement plan, accelerating the promotion of fine breeds and continuously optimizing the production performance.

261 breeding boars from 16 enterprises across the country were tested. 18 top-grade breeding boars were selected for public auction, and 141 selected high-quality breeding pigs participated in sealed-bid auction. At the auction, top-grade boars were shown one by one on the screen. The last contestant “Dabai” was a pig ranked first in the comprehensive index. After multiple bids, it was auctioned at a price of 36,000 yuan and became the “bidding king”. 18 top-grade boars were sold 327,000 yuan in total, while 141 high-quality pigs were sold total 288,100 yuan.

“This year’s auction was conducted online and offline, which not only facilitates bidders to buy breeding pigs, but also eliminates participants’ worries about biological safety,” said Zhou Quan, Deputy Director of the Breeding Swine Quality Supervision and Testing Center, Ministry of Agriculture. He also said that this event embodied spirit of innovation and technology: the pig measurement used the combination of GSI comprehensive index and genome evaluation to classify the participating breeding pigs with high-density gene chip, and the comprehensive evaluation results and file cards of pigs were uploaded so that the breeding pigs’ information could be acquired online.
