Two Professors from HZAU Harvest Youth S&T Awards of CAASS

On Feb. 8, according to the decision of China Association of Agricultural Science Societies (CAASS), Prof. Yin Ping from College of Life Science and Technology and Prof. Wang Maojun from College of Plant Science and Technology of HZAU were on the winners list of 2020 Youth S&T Awards of CAASS.

In order to implement the instructions in the congratulatory letter for the centennial anniversary of CAASS by General Secretary Xi Jinping and to encourage the young talents contributors in agricultural S&T innovation and the development of rural economy, CAASS decided to confer the Youth S&T Awards on 51 young scientific talents. It aims to encourage the agricultural S&T workers to follow the winners’ lead in resolving the key technical problems in the frontier of agriculture, thereby revitalizing the rural area in China and accelerating the modernization of agriculture. The winners of the award have always persisted in carrying forward the spirit of scientists in the new era and thus made remarkable achievements in basic research, engineering science and technology, science popularization and academic transformation, enhancing China’s independent capacity for agricultural sci-tech innovation. Therefore, they are the outstanding representatives of young agricultural S&T workers.

Brief Introduction to Prof. Ying Ping and Prof. Wang Maojun

Yin Ping, professor and vice dean from College of Life Science&Technology of HZAU, has long engaged in the research of biochemistry and molecular biology. With chloroplast RNA-binding proteins as the research object, Prof. Yin has undertaken research on dynamic regulation of RNA generation, processing and degradation, committed to revealing the role of RNA metabolic regulation in cell life by structural biology and biochemistry. Since 2013, he has published 19 papers on Nature, Nature Plants, Nature Communications and other journals, 14 as independent corresponding author and 5 as co-corresponding author.

Wang Maojun, a professor from College of Plant Science and Technology of HZAU, engages in the research of cotton genomics and mechanism of cotton fiber development and the genetic improvement of fiber quality promoted by big data thinking. By assembling the reference genomes of upland and island cotton, he has discovered the asymmetric domestication selection of the upland cotton sub-genome and the alteration of the three-dimensional spatial structure of the genome after polyploidization, and revealed the genetic regulatory network and dynamic epistatic regulation during cotton fiber development. In 2019, Prof. Wang won the Outstanding Youth Science Foundation of the National Natural Science Foundation of China and was selected as a member of the National “Post-doctoral Innovative Talent Support Program”, “Young Talents Support Project” of China Association for Science and Technology.
