We Have a Bilateral Workshop on Fruit Science with PRF

On Oct. 24th, Huazhong Agricultural University (HZAU) and The New Zealand Institute for Plant & Food Research Limited (PFR) held a bilateral workshop titled “from the Laboratory to Industrial Application---Bilateral Workshop on Fruit Science”. The workshop was hosted by HZAU, attracting eight scholars from PFR and The University of Queensland (UQ).

HZAU’s President Li Zhaohu delivered a welcome speech and introduced HZAU's history, location, school running scale and scientific research achievements. He hoped that this bilateral workshop could further strengthen the cooperation among HZAU, PFR and the UQ in academic exchanges, talent cultivation, scientific research and so on.

After the opening ceremony, eight scholars and Prof. Xu Juan, Prof. Xu Qiang and other professors from HZAU gave academic reports respectively. The topics involved kiwifruit fast flowering and breeding, applications of sensory evaluation to benefit sensory horticulture development and control of plant architecture-from mutants to compounds, citrus genomes and excavation of apomixis genes.

After the workshop, foreign scholars visited the Key Laboratory of Horticultural Plant Biology of Ministry of Education and the Sensory Evaluation Laboratory, and also went on a field trip to citrus base and flower base. They were impressed by the high-quality research results and laboratory conditions of HZAU and expressed their willingness to cooperate with HZAU in scientific research. Prof. Heather Smyth and Prof. Craig Hardner from the UQ are planning further cooperation with HZAU in sensory evaluation of horticultural products and screening resistance genes of Candidatus Liberibacter spp.

This bilateral workshop will promote the laboratory research and application in horticultural industry, and advance the "Double First Class University Initiative" (world-class universities and disciplines), and is also of great significance for facilitating research and cooperation in the field of horticulture.
