From November 23 to 24, the 2018 National Landscape Architecture Education Conference was held in HZAU, together with the National Landscape Architecture Graduate Works Exhibition themed “Landscape Architecture Education under the New Situation——Taking Undergraduate Education as the Foundation”. The conference and the exhibition were organized by the College of Horticulture & Forestry Sciences and hosted by Chinese Society of Landscape Architecture, the Higher Education Institution Landscape Architecture Discipline Professional Steering Committee, National Master of Landscape Architecture Education Steering Committee, and Landscape Architecture Discipline Evaluation Group in the Committee on Academic Degrees of the State Council.
A total of 160 pieces of works from 54 Chinese universities were displayed at the exhibition featuring "heritage protection", "planning and design", "ecological restoration", and "habitat creation". Due to regional differences, the works are tinged with their own characteristics. Tongji University features in functional researches on planning and design; Sichuan University is experienced in mountain planning thanks to the typography of Sichuan Province; The works of China Academy of Fine Arts are highly ornamental; HZAU presented a classical architectural restoration design draft of the Summer Resort---Shuiyue Nunnery (water and moon nunnery), as one of its research orientation is "heritage protection".
One of the exhibited works " Deep Valley in Red Coast Base-Chifeng Pingxi Mining Park Conceptual Plan" was created by Zhao Shuang, a graduate student from the College of Horticulture & Forestry Sciences. The site she chose is located at West Open-Pit Mine in Chifeng Pingzhuang Town. Taking the transformation of energy industry as an opportunity, the park is to break ground in 2025 after two phases of ecological restoration. According to the plan, this park is designed as the Cultural and Creative Industry Incubator, the demonstration zone of mine restoration and transformation, the unique experience zone of science and technology and human tourism, including the demonstration zone of intelligent forest and animal husbandry, the industrial garden, the demonstration zone of photovoltaic animal husbandry, the makerspace and so on. Combining intelligent system and interactive technology, Zhao Shuang also tried to design an AI-themed scenic spot which includes an itinerary for pedestrians at night. When asked about her design ideas, Zhao Shuang said: "The idea of the “Deep Valley in Red Coast Base” was inspired by the science fiction The Three-Body Problem in which the ever-changing scenery is hidden behind an industrial base in Inner Mongolia.
Li Jingbo, who was in charge of the exhibition remarked that the exhibition signified a review and showed a prospect. He said: “The new era has put forward new expectations and new requirements for undergraduate education. Landscape architects are faced with more challenges and higher requirements to build a beautiful China, implement the strategy of rural revitalization, and promote the construction of ecological civilization. These works demonstrate students’ reflections on art, humanistic concern, spiritual pursuit and cultural expectations, and embody the ideals and wisdom of landscape architects in creating a better life. At the same time, it also provides a platform for teachers, students and architects where they can observe, exchange and learn to explore ways of developing the discipline of landscape architecture.”
