Promotion Conference on Generalization of Freshwater Fish Processing Technology Held at HZAU

On May 25th, Huazhong Agricultural University (HZAU) held a promotion conference on generalization of freshwater fish processing technology. “Fish scale can be used as raw material to produce high quality fish gelatine and fish products that are suitable for the elderly and children…” Tu Zongcai, an expert of Jiangxi Normal University and National Technology System for Conventional Freshwater Fish Industries, stepped into the limelight with his technical achievement which promoted aquatic product processing companies to conclude agreements.

The promotion conference, initiated by Fishery and Fishery Administration Bureau of Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs to promote freshwater fish processing technology, was attended by representatives from 20 universities and research centers and 60 aquatic product processing companies, as well as officials of fishery departments. Experts analyzed the status quo and future prospect of freshwater fish processing technology, and reported on technological demands and research achievements. They also discussed how to make these achievements meet industrial demands.

This promotion activity collected 52 technological achievements and 15 technological requirements. 16 research institutions introduced and promoted their technological achievements, including Jiangnan University, China Agricultural University, Huazhong Agricultural University, Jiangxi Normal University, and Hubei (province) Academy of Agricultural Science. Research institutions and fishery companies expressed their intentions to cooperate, and signed contracts.
As a world leader in freshwater fish industry, China produces about 30 million tons of freshwater fish annually, contributing 73.9% of its total fish production and 87.5% of its freshwater aquatic products. China’s water product processing industry has also scored remarkable achievements, with processing systems being established in aquatic products, including frozen goods, dried and salted goods, surimi goods, canned goods, fish meal and fish oil. But the problems lie in a low processing percentage of mere 17%, low resource utilization rate and low technological level, and failure to catch up with consumer demands.

While introducing the platform for “connecting technology of freshwater aquatic product processing and preservation to industrial demands”, HZAU’s professor Xiong Shanbai, director of National R&D Branch Center (Wuhan) for Conventional Freshwater Fish Processing, pointed out that despite numerous research achievements made by scholars at universities and research institutions, their applications have not been widespread due to obstructed communication. For this sake, the Fishery and Fishery Administration Bureau of Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs initiated the meeting to bridge the gap between technologies and industry needs, realize technology transference to meet new consumer demands for aquatic products, and promote transformation and upgrading as well as sustainable development of freshwater fish processing industry.
