Prof. Zhu Lizhong Lectures on Soil Pollution Prevention and Control System

On the morning of May 21, Prof. Zhu Lizhong visited the State Key Laboratory of Agricultural Microbiology, HZAU and delivered a lecture titled “Thoughts on Soil Pollution Control in China”. Zhu Lizhong is the professor from College of Environment & Resources Sciences of Zhejiang University and member of Chinese Academy of Engineering,
Prof. Zhu firstly reviewed the current status of soil pollution in China by stressing the severe fact that the total over standard rate of soil pollution had amounted to 16.1%. He also showed the progress of implementation of the 10-Chapter Soil Pollution Action Plan (the Action Plan for Soil Pollution Prevention and Control) issued by State Council.
Then Prof. Zhu continued with detailed interpretation about the focus and difficulty in the research of China’s soil pollution prevention and control, mainly from aspects of number of publications and patents, and remediation technology both home and abroad. In his views, the focus of soil pollution prevention is to lay solid foundations, establish one system, keep two bottom lines and control three types of risks. The difficulty is to accurately determine soil pollution situation and to establish soil pollution prevention and control system.
Prof. Zhu said that the study of soil pollution in China has the characteristics of late start and rapid development, so it is urgent to construct the soil environmental security technology system, the industrial support system and the advanced risk control system suitable for our national conditions.
The construction of soil pollution prevention and control system, Prof. Zhu believed, depends on the organic combination of government leading, enterprise responsibility-undertaking, public participation and social supervision. Better soil environment ensures safer agricultural products, human living environment as well as more sustainable utilization of soil resource. Prof. Zhu also conducted interactive exchanges with teachers and students on farmland soil pollution control and the popularization of soil pollution.
This lecture is among series of academic activities carried out by College of Environment & Resources to commemorate its 70th anniversary and the 120th anniversary of HZAU.
