HZAU Students Awarded in Town Design Contest

From Nov 1st to 24th, HZAU team, led by Prof. Zhang Bin from the Landscape Architecture Department, participated in the first national “Palm-Cup” Ecological Town Design Contest and won the “Best Socially Responsible Design" and “Best Application for Night Scene”. The contest was hosted by National Master of Landscape Architecture (MLA) Education Steering Committee, China Landscape Architecture Education Committee and the local government, and organized by Palm Eco-Town Development Co., Ltd.

The first national “Palm-Cup” Ecological Town Design Contest was held in Guiyang (in southwest China) and Zhongshan (in Guangdong Province). Among the 16 universities invited nationwide, HZAU was the only university from Hubei Province. The team members are 2016 graduate students Gao Yin, Chen Chuxi, Liang Zhitong and Yang Lijing.

With the topic of eco-town construction, the 24-day contest was divided into three stages, comprising design development, study tours, and review. This contest was conducted by drafting ecological development plans for Xiaolan town (in Zhongshan). It provided opportunities for MLA students to gain hands-on experience and apply what they’ve learned at class to solve current problems of landscape development in cities and towns.

From 18th to 23rd, all teams toured Guiyang and Zhongshan for research and studies of towns with local features. Prof. Zhang, also a member of National MLA Education Steering Committee, was invited to provide his insights into the construction of featured towns in China. During the review stage on Nov 24th, HZAU team presented its innovative design work—A Tale of Xiaolan. The design integrated the town’s LED industry with the chrysanthemum culture to build a multidimensional city: day and night, inside and outside, upper space and lower space. It revealed the town's objectives for future development and protection of culture and history. The wonderful design finally won HZAU team the two awards.
