On the morning of November 6, Dean Craig Beyrouty and his three colleagues from the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (AGNR), University of Maryland (UMD), visited Huazhong Agricultural University (HZAU). Vice President Gao Chi and heads from relevant executive departments and colleges met with the delegation at the meeting room on the 6th floor of the International Academic Exchange Center. The meeting was hosted by Hu Chengxiao, Dean of International College.

Gao extended a warm welcome to Craig and his delegation and then introduced to them the history of HZAU and its preponderant disciplines. He stressed that five disciplines of HZAU are on the list of “Double First-Class” initiative which provides new opportunities for its development. The university is also striving to optimize the environment for disciplines development and open-up education aligning with the construction of the initiative. Gao hoped that the bilateral cooperation between HZAU and UMD in scientific research, students’ training, and exchange programs will further promote the construction of HZAU’s “First-Class" disciplines.

Dean Craig Beyrouty firstly congratulated HZAU on its entering into the national “Double First-Class” initiative and then gave a brief introduction to UMD. He said that UMD was willing to establish a partnership with HZAU and hoped to strengthen their cooperation in personnel training and scientific research, especially between the preponderant disciplines of both universities.

Subsequently, both sides jointly signed the HZAU and UMD Cooperation Framework Agreement. During the meeting, the heads of College of Horticulture & Forestry, College of Plant Science & Technology, College of Animal Science & Technology/College of Veterinary Medicine, College of Food Science & Technology, and College of Life Science & Technology introduced their respective disciplinary strengths, platform constructions and international cooperation and exchange prospects. They also shared ideas on specific implementation plans for joint training of students, exchange of young teachers, organization of bilateral academic conferences, and other exchange programs.

After the meeting, the delegation of AGNR visited the National Key Laboratory of Crop Genetic Improvement and Key Laboratory of Horticultural Plant Biology, Ministry of Education. They also visited College of Plant Science & Technology, College of Horticulture & Forestry and College of Food Science & Technology and had further talks and discussions with the faculty and students of each college.  

President Deng Xiuxin also met with the UMD delegation during their visit and cordially invited them to attend the 120th anniversary celebration of HZAU next year.
