The general planning area of the Laboratory covered 130,000 square meters. Consisting of two zones—science and technology innovation research buildings and science and technology achievement incubation buildings, it will be completed in four phases. Moreover, 401 million yuan will be invested in the first phase and the main building work is planned to be completed within the year.

Officially approved for establishment by Hubei government in Feb.2021, the Laboratory was an important strategic plan of the government to build Hubei into a great province through science and technology. With HZAU being the initiator, it focuses on the biological breeding research, aims to pull together high-quality innovation forces and resources at home and abroad, promotes collaborative innovation and opens the exchange and sharing of resources so as to strive for further major breakthroughs in innovation concepts and key technologies. All these efforts will help build Wuhan into a China capital of seed industry, contribute to the early construction of a national laboratory of the biological seed industry, thus further ensuring that Wuhan’s seed resources are self-supporting and under better control and achieve self-reliance in seed technology,
At present, more than 20 full-time outstanding talents from home and abroad have been introduced and the regular researchers have numbered 218 who are mainly engaged in the core species areas covering crop, horticultural crops, oil-bearing crops, livestock & poultry and aquaculture. In addition, they have published more than 230 papers on scientific research results with two in the international journal Science, making significant breakthroughs in the frontier fields such as high photosynthetic efficiency in crop and crop domestication mechanism revelation. New varieties of rice and rapeseed, including E Liangyou 156, Hanyou 79, Huayouza 651 and Zhongyou 811, were bred by regular researchers; besides, the newly bred kind—Xidu Black Pig—was approved at the national level in 2021, achieving a major breakthrough of “from 0 to 1” in Hubei Province in the past 30 years.
