HZAU always sees as her own responsibility to invigorate China through science and education and feels committed to serving the society. By bringing into full play her advantages in technology and human resources and utilizing her major scientific and technological achievements, HZAU has made significant contributions in the construction of a new socialist countryside and a harmonious society. A number of important results have been made in the following research areas: plant and animal genetics and breeding, genomics and molecular biology, animal preventive veterinary medicine, pomology, horticulture and vegetable science, animal and plant disease prevention and control and safety evaluation, plant and animal production technology, food engineering and agricultural product processing, efficient use of agricultural resources and development of biomass energy, agricultural economics and land management, creating marked social and economic benefits.
From many years of her own experience, HZAU has formed her distinct development model known as " Four Ones" which means "one leading scientist can organize and cultivate one creative research team which will in turn develop one dominant discipline, which will give rise to one profitable industry". In 2009, HZAU launched the New Countryside Construction Action Plan referred to as "111" Program, meaning "economic success of one family will contribute to the development to one village and one well-developed village will bring prosperity to one county, and the Science and Technology Supporting Plan for Enterprises, also known as "Hundred Professors into Hundred Enterprises" or "Double-Hundred" Plan. Thus complete new patterns characteristic of multiform, multi-level and multi-way have been created to promote advanced knowledge, popularize scientific and technological achievements so as to boost industrial development and serve new socialist countryside which are an important part of the building of a harmonious society.
