1st Forum on Frontier in Integrative Biology and Biomedicine Opens at HZAU

On the morning of November 14th, 2016, at the invitation of Prof. Dong Zhiqiang from the College of Life Science and Technology, Prof. Shu Xiaokun, Independent Principal Investigator (PI) of University of California, San Francisco(UCSF) delivered a special report entitled Visualize Spatiotemporal Dynamics of Cell Signaling in Vivo with Rationally Designed Fluorogenic Reporters which attracted over a hundred faculty members and students.
Prof. Shu mainly introduced how his team’s biological tools could be integrated with physical, chemical and engineering methods. These tools can be widely used with in vivo imaging analysis, signal pathway detection and the manipulation of cells and gene functions. In this study, Prof. Shu encapsulated four major research directions, including: (1) near-infrared fluorescent protein IFP2.0 / mIFP and far-infrared protein iBlueberry applied to imaging of cells and proteins in vivo; (2) near-infrared fluorescent protein tool iCasper and Green fluorescent protein tool ZipGFP applied to dynamic imaging analysis of intracellular signal pathway; (3) the tools of UnaG-based PPI receptor(uPPI),singlet oxygen triplet energy transfer(STET),singlet oxygen mediated protein labeling (SPRAY)applied to the detection and analysis of protein interactions in vivo; (4) optogenetics cell ablation tool miniSOG2 applied to spatio-temporal controllability in vivo.
The attendees showed great interest in various practical biological tools developed by Prof. Shu. Many teachers had an in-depth discussion with him after the report.
Prof. Shu’s presentation is one in a series of academic exchanges held by the College of Life Science and Technology on the heels of the Frontiers in Botany Forum and Frontiers in Microbiology Forum. Founded in 2014, the Frontiers in Botany Forum has held 47 academic exchanges and the Frontiers in Microbiology Forum has held more than 20 exchanges. Over one hundred prestigious scientists were invited to share their insights with teachers and students.
